Fall floral created by Richard Cadoret, owner/interior decorator at Glam Vintage & Moderne

Tomorrow is annual Port Hope House Tour day and for shops in the ‘hood, especially Glam Vintage & Moderne,  it’s “showtime”.

Richard Cadoret, Glam’s owner/interior decorator has created a welcoming window and floral for house “tourists” to enjoy.  He’s also “inviting”  all his display furnishings  “to leave”.

The savvy shopper knows this really means that he’s clearing all regular priced stock at 25% off and providing up to 50% off on items that won’t work in his upcoming “winter” vision.

Doors open at 10 am tomorrow.   Prepare to seize the savings.

Touch Latch Storage

Working a clean look is made simpler with the wonders of touch latch cabinetry.  This hardwood cabinet finished in an antiqued silver foil is a perfect hideaway for those half full booze bottles you’re saving in case someone actually wants a liqueur… or God forbid a mixed drink.  It also stores wine… but not for long.

Aptly placed next to the cabinet is a campaign styled upholstered bench should you need to spend an inordinate amount of time re-stocking it.

Cutting Edge Wallcoverings

Like many baby boomers, Richard and I grew up with pre-pasted themed wallpaper surrounding us.  Homey copper kettles and tea pots repeated themselves all too often throughout our tiny kitchen, and ballerinas en point danced everywhere in my bedroom. Flocked damask wallpaper was often favourited by the same people who encased their couches in clear plastic slip(ery)covers.  Appreciation for texture versus patterning took hold in the 70’s revival of grasscloth but colours and weaves were limited.

For today’s look we’ve cleaned and decluttered our nests and “bought into” painting out baseboards and mouldings, solid coloured spare furniture and neutral grey walls. Options for colour pops and patterning have been limited to accessories including toss cushions, lamps, art and  area rugs.

The right wallcoverings can take your place from bland to “the edge of glory” a.k.a “WOW”.   Wallcovering books are showing how to use this in your contemporary decor and retain the clean lines we’ve worked so hard to get without creating a 60’s flashback moment. Flip through some at Glam Vintage & Moderne for inspiration before everybody else does.  You might even learn to love flocked damask.

I double dare you.

Kid friendly Coffee Tables

Reclaimed Wood & Iron Coffee Table at Glam Vintage & Moderne

It’s hard to find attractive kiddy friendly coffee tables. Constraining your selection to those without sharp corners or glass tops reduces potential finds.  Sure, round tempered glass is fine but you’ll hate those gooey little telltale fingerprints that reveal your secret aversion to cleaning way too often. An attractive alternative is a reclaimed wood top like the one above in a  unique “lozenge” shape.  Kids would have a hard time killing this time-worn look as it is pre-distressed.  Furthermore the campaign style iron base is handy for steadying wobbly toddlers.

Another great choice is a round marble top on an iron base.  This one isn’t climbable and the patterning would disguise most sticky messes until company comes.

(Having thwarted your child’s efforts to sabotage your tables, you can only hope they don’t see your walls as a blank canvas.)

Keep Fish “in” the Water

fish plaqueIn the past, cottage and waterfront homes were often decorated with real “dead” small mouth bass sharks and even dolphins. I don’t know if it’s having grown up on “Flipper” re-runs, but  I find that decor that was previously living  is just gross…not to mention bad Feng Shui and lousy Karma.  Furthermore, dusting or cleaning those things has got to be a nightmare.

The organic concept of “fish” in decor can be lovely if they are “representational”.

Here are some perfect examples of clean cottage decorating.

No fish were harmed to create these tranquil visuals.

Bling Toss

I “said” I was looking for a bed for my infrequent out-of-town guest, but honestly I got it for the “room”.  It’s an office which just looked too officious…all books, manuals, computers, cords and supplies. Despite my efforts to soften its edge with art,  area rug and a couple of lamps it was just plain ugly.

Canadian upholstery maker, Statum Designs makes this cleanly styled comfy daybed that’s heaven to curl up on.  I bought it in the neutral fabric because a) I move a lot and more importantly b) I would get to accessorize it with lots of new toss cushions from Glam.

This is some sort of sickness…next thing you know I’m not going to be happy with the area rug.

Lean in…deals…July 18th & 19th at Glam

sidewalk sale signWhen Port Hope’s summer sale took place on the  closed “street”, they called it the  “Summer Sidewalk Sale”. Since it’s actually on the “sidewalk” this year,  it follows that the “real deals” will be lurking inside the stores.

The important thing to note is that Glam Vintage & Moderne has up to 50% off on lots of great home decor and …”lean in”…it’s not seasonal stuff. There are discontinued draperies and vintage and modern art that can adorn your interior space at any time of the year.

One more thing.  “Lean in“…

arrive early, Glam doesn’t have multiples of anything.  When the deals are gone you’ll have to wait until Boxing Day for this much fun.
