Glam Vintage & Moderne's entry for The Festival of Trees

Glam Vintage & Moderne’s entry for The Festival of Trees

The Port Hope Festival of Trees starts this Friday, which conveniently takes place:

a) after this recent snow dump has cleared b) on the same night as The Candlelight Walk and LIghting of Memorial Park and c) on the same night as Moonlight Madness.

Festival of Trees 2013

This is a night where you can kickstart your Christmas.  In the afternoon visit the Capitol Theatre and enter a draw for your favourite of the 80 trees .  Glam’s tree is the one without a single bare spot.  It is fully laden with berries, bows, balls and feathers in warm tones of gold and peach.  It is DONE…I mean totally!

Have a little dinner at one of Port Hope’s great restos then at 7pm warm your heart by watching the traditional Candlelight Walk to the lighting ceremony in Memorial Park.

Finally snap out of the glow and  “START YOUR SHOPPING”.  Most of the retailers will provide discounts “Friday night only” so take advantage of their generosity and get your list ticked off locally at reduced prices.  Call some friends and make a date for this special night out.

Better still,  invite them to stay over.  Nothing takes the edge off like the sights and sounds of the following day’s whimsical Port Hope Santa Claus parade coupled with a Tylenol extra strength.

Pa rump a pum pum.

Dreaming of a White Christmas? or not?

Stop dreaming and cast your eyes at the store window of Glam Vintage & Moderne.  Use lots of white birch and silver-grey accessories to work this theme.  Picture curling up in the oversized white linen wing back chair in front of your glowing fireplace with a frothy hot toddy and a steamy page turner.

Ok snap out of it and step inside Glam where the halls are decked in full Technicolor.

All good boys and girls deserve a champagne breakfast in bed with new linens don’t they?

Whatever your theme is this Christmas, Glam’s got that bit of whimsy you’ll just “have to have” to create the festive look you’re dreaming of.

Cookie Exchange

Don’t succumb to cookie exchanges that have you up all night baking to get other people’s cookies (that might be worse than yours).

Inside Richard’s Bathrooms

The Port Hope annual House Tour is tomorrow and tickets are sold out.  Proprietor of Glam Vintage & Moderne, Richard Cadoret, my bro, is on it.   I took these photos when he wasn’t looking so I could give you a sneak peak.

If you’ve priced good wallpaper lately, you know that it’s surprisingly unaffordable.  The key therefore is to use it in small spaces and get maximum bang for the buck.  See how Richard’s powder room (above) and main bath (below) went from ho-hum standard condo to Ta DA!  with a couple of double rolls.  Ok, he’s also chosen some fabulous vintage accessories, but the wallpaper was his inspiration.

You Are Invited to Richard’s House

Glam Vintage & Moderne invites you to the Port Hope House Tour

Richard has just done a new store window to support Port Hope’s annual house tour on October 5th. This year Richard’s condo/loft space, in a converted century old school, is on it!

The window also promotes made in Haiti papier-mache which are hand constructed from layers of re-purposed cement bags and old french publications including Balzac‘s short stories and plays. This Oprah endorsed business trains and employs many Haitians who were left homeless after the earthquake in 2010.

Surreptitiously, I thought you’d enjoy this sneak peek of Richard’s abode.  He actually designed and had these bevelled antiqued mirror subway tiles for his backsplash custom-made.  Ditto for the rangehood.

He really didn’t want to do any unveiling before the tour but he doesn’t have the password for this blog.

Tickets are $25 and available at Glam Vintage & Moderne

Overlay and Oval Knobs on French Polished Maple

These are solidly handcrafted masculine maple chests with dovetail jointed drawers, carved bun feet, and oval brass knobs.  A raised celtic pattern overlays the smooth French polished wood.

No I didn’t inadvertently leave “his” out of this blog title.  Let’s face it, with wide deep generous drawers like these most men could survive with just two and let “her” encroach to four.

It’s payback time for nylons and pantyhose.

The Good, the Bad and the Dirty Decorating Words

Inside Glam Vintage & Moderne

Imagine having customers who have “bought in” to your complete concept or design.  They get the vision created specifically for them including specific fabrics for upholstery, coordinating paint colours and drapery, area rugs, lighting, and furniture.  As a show of good faith they have solidified the deal with a deposit i.e. $$ .

A Glimpse at Interior Decorator Richard Cadoret’s Drapery, Area Rugs and Furniture at Glam Vintage & Moderne

The only things completely in the decorator’s control are paint colour, and items currently in the decorator’s inventory.  Backorder is a very bad word suppliers use to tell decorators that the item will be delayed.  Usually a guesstimated delivery date is provided.

The dirtiest of all words are “this item has been discontinued“.    The savvy decorator needs to convince the client that there are indeed better options and that the original vision is actually better with the new substituted product.

I am currently trying to convince myself that the 6 beautiful backordered chrome pendant lights (that I didn’t order immediately but rather delayed ordering until I needed them) are not actually really what I wanted and that there exists something better that is available now.  I am my worst (and only) client.  I need a professional….oh Richard?
