Lean in…deals…July 18th & 19th at Glam

sidewalk sale signWhen Port Hope’s summer sale took place on the  closed “street”, they called it the  “Summer Sidewalk Sale”. Since it’s actually on the “sidewalk” this year,  it follows that the “real deals” will be lurking inside the stores.

The important thing to note is that Glam Vintage & Moderne has up to 50% off on lots of great home decor and …”lean in”…it’s not seasonal stuff. There are discontinued draperies and vintage and modern art that can adorn your interior space at any time of the year.

One more thing.  “Lean in“…

arrive early, Glam doesn’t have multiples of anything.  When the deals are gone you’ll have to wait until Boxing Day for this much fun.

Bistro Time

Bistro look insideIt’s summer…or is it?  You’ve probably got plans to sit on the patio sipping margaritas today.  But if the weather should take a turn for the worse and it’s too cold  or windy to go outside why not feel the season inside by setting up a bistro table with counter height stools near a window?   Sitting at bistro height gives you that special festive atmosphere without actually having go “out”.  It elevates your mood even before your first drink.

The faux driftwood grey grain on the ample hexagonal table top below works easily with 4 chairs and will not leave telltale rings after the party is over.  The hand forged iron base has the old world craftmanship which says authentic “French Bistro”.

To further enhance the mood , tease your guests by creating a blackboard promising ridiculous French specials that you’ll never make.

Desk Set Revisited

Hepburn & Tracy in 1957 comedy "Desk Set"

Hepburn & Tracy in 1957 comedy “Desk Set”

I was thinking about furnishing my small office with some compact mid-century pieces other than myself.  Coincidentally, I made my entrance in the late 50’s along with the first “electronic brain”.  At this time clean furniture styling was overshadowed by the giant elevated computer room with reels and realms of paper output.

Fortunately storage these days is limited to sticks and disks that can be slipped into a small drawer. This vintage slatted console with touch latch doors perfectly conceals all your unsightly electronic gizmos. Shelving and file cabinets are redundant unless you are from the olden days and still require hard copy back-up and or real books.

A vintage mahogany desk with criss-cross campaign styling would complete the look.  It provides loads of space for your laptop, iPhone, digital picture frame and energy drink and drawers to hide your tell-tale reading glasses, calculator and pre-historic pens and paper.

This Bench makes Sense

Bench Seating for Extra Guests

Cane Backing on Teak BenchFrom day-to-day, this clean ebonized vintage bench is most at home in the front entry way, veranda, mud room garden room or patio.  The bonus is it’s availability for double duty in the kitchen when you’re up to entertaining guests # 5 and 6.

Let’s face it most of us entertain just one person at dinner every night.  Having your table set for 6 to 8 people looks like you are having a party and nobody showed.  If you’ve scaled back on your square footage you probably eliminated the redundant dining room.

I like having the flexibility of bench seating borrowed from another room for guests # 5 and 6.

If you want “them” as regulars add seat cushions.  If not …let sleeping dogs lie.

Richard’s Retail Woes

Glam Vintage & Moderne Store Window August 2013

Glam Vintage & Moderne Store Window August 2013

As a former retailer I can attest to the common annoyances shared by most retailers.  From the dripping ice cream to the customers labelled “bebacks” because they promise they’ll come back later.  And the gaggle of girls (women) who actually walk through the store never seeing anything (including the retailer) because they are busy catching up on old times and planning dinner.

Most retailers feature things in the store window that they want to sell.  It is evident that my bro Richard plans his seasonal windows with great care.  For instance for this Coney Island themed summer window Richard painstakingly dyed cotton  (and his fingers) pink to create cotton candy.  He purchased lattice to mimic the old wooden rollercoaster and dumped bags of sand into the window. At the centre he featured a unique Rococo console.  So when a customer actually purchased said console, Richard grudgingly replaced it with a deco piece which was not part of the original vision.  REALLY?? LOL!!!    I should have had such problems!

Maple Dressers

Maple Dressers no longer available at Glam Vintage & Moderne

On the other hand he did just call me to tell me he just sold this sweet pair of dressers.  American made quality maple crackle finish.  Gorgeous.  I took pics from every angle to show the amazing workmanship of these pieces.  I almost had the blog finished…

NOW THAT IS SIMPLY NOT FUNNY.

Which Came First, the Pillow or the Urn?

Vase and Pillow

In this pic, the colourful distressed pattern on the pillow in the background mimics the vivid beauty of the mid 19th century urn in the foreground.

The distressed almost faded print on this pillow is on trend for 2013.

You’ve no doubt seen this look on area rugs where a vivid colour is used with a distressed print as though it  had been worn out over time. It leaves the impression of a rare antique find as opposed to a spanking new quality reproduction.

Using today’s distressed yet colourful  interpretations of accessories against the “real deal” like this urn lends credibility to your colour choices.

In other words, you’ll look like you know what you are doing.

Sliding Sideboard

Most sideboards command attention.  Usually they are very large, counter height and obtrusive.  This one is small but its’ craftsmanship won’t let it go unnoticed.  It’s got gorgeous walnut wood grain, egg and dart trim and original brass hardware.  It would make a nice hall entry piece as it is only 40 inches in length and 18 inches deep.

Walnut Sideboard Its’ interior could hold hats and scarves but is high enough to store everyday essentials like liquor and long-stemmed glassware.

And it’s on wheels which is very handy for us weaklings with a penchant for rearranging furniture with a partner who’s sick of doing it.
