Desk Set Revisited

I was thinking about furnishing my small office with some compact mid-century pieces other than myself.  Coincidentally, I made my entrance in the late 50’s along with the first “electronic brain”.  At this time clean furniture styling was overshadowed by the giant elevated computer room with reels and realms of paper output.

Fortunately storage these days is limited to sticks and disks that can be slipped into a small drawer. This vintage slatted console with touch latch doors perfectly conceals all your unsightly electronic gizmos. Shelving and file cabinets are redundant unless you are from the olden days and still require hard copy back-up and or real books.

A vintage mahogany desk with criss-cross campaign styling would complete the look.  It provides loads of space for your laptop, iPhone, digital picture frame and energy drink and drawers to hide your tell-tale reading glasses, calculator and pre-historic pens and paper.

Ode to the Etagere

etagere on sale now at Glam

Metal and Mahogany Etagere on sale now at Glam Vintage & Moderne

Wikipedia correctly describes the etagere as a light piece of furniture originating in 18th century France which was named for its’ various levels or “stages”.  Then unfortunately they go on to describe it as shelving with long legs that fits over the back of the toilet.

WHY do perfectly descriptive words get dumbed down?  For instance the word awesome was once used to mean awe-inspiring or stunning spectacle.  Now it means “cool”.  And another thing, who would put their Hermes perfume on a shelf at the back of a toilet for a high-priced plumber to fish out later?   But I digress.

Anyway,  this campaign styled mahogany and metal etagere is only 24 inches wide and  its’ height at almost 6 feet makes for efficient use of your wall space to display or store stuff in the bathroom, bedroom or kitchen.

Right now it’s marked down by over 40% which is pretty freakin’ AWESOME!

Deep Discounts, the Harbinger of Spring

In a perfect decor world, inventory would flow on a “FIFO” basis.  The “first (piece) in” would be the “first out”.  To the retailers dismay most customers are wowed by the new stuff, hence product often flows on a LIFO (last in first out) basis.

A savvy customer recognizes that smart retailers will discount the old stock to make room  for new,  just to be sure that their showroom never looks “tired”.

If you have not been reading between the lines here… let me spell it out for you:

Glam Vintage & Moderne’s new spring window in on trend colours is evidence that all furniture and accessories that have seen winter are ON SALE NOW.

You could be the “FIFO” with the best for less.

The Good, the Bad and the Dirty Decorating Words

Imagine having customers who have “bought in” to your complete concept or design.  They get the vision created specifically for them including specific fabrics for upholstery, coordinating paint colours and drapery, area rugs, lighting, and furniture.  As a show of good faith they have solidified the deal with a deposit i.e. $$ .

A Glimpse at Interior Decorator Richard Cadoret’s Drapery, Area Rugs and Furniture at Glam Vintage & Moderne

The only things completely in the decorator’s control are paint colour, and items currently in the decorator’s inventory.  Backorder is a very bad word suppliers use to tell decorators that the item will be delayed.  Usually a guesstimated delivery date is provided.

The dirtiest of all words are “this item has been discontinued“.    The savvy decorator needs to convince the client that there are indeed better options and that the original vision is actually better with the new substituted product.

I am currently trying to convince myself that the 6 beautiful backordered chrome pendant lights (that I didn’t order immediately but rather delayed ordering until I needed them) are not actually really what I wanted and that there exists something better that is available now.  I am my worst (and only) client.  I need a professional….oh Richard?

Sliding Sideboard

Most sideboards command attention.  Usually they are very large, counter height and obtrusive.  This one is small but its’ craftsmanship won’t let it go unnoticed.  It’s got gorgeous walnut wood grain, egg and dart trim and original brass hardware.  It would make a nice hall entry piece as it is only 40 inches in length and 18 inches deep.

Walnut Sideboard Its’ interior could hold hats and scarves but is high enough to store everyday essentials like liquor and long-stemmed glassware.

And it’s on wheels which is very handy for us weaklings with a penchant for rearranging furniture with a partner who’s sick of doing it.

Alice Roosevelt (Theodore’s daughter) said, “if you can’t say something good about someone, sit right here by me”.

A Chinese Chippendale (a.k.a. Chinoiserie) styled arm-chair or 2 are sure to command attention working today’s eclectic spaces.  Use one to accent a desk or side table.  Consider using two to flank a console table or to surround a cocktail table.  The cane seating can be topped with seat cushions but the generous proportions make them quite comfortable as is.  Their sturdy construction and lacquered finish will endure years of quality “chinwagging”.   …   If only chairs could talk.

Inventory Intervention

Inside Glam Jan 2013

Inside Glam Vintage & Moderne

Like all homeowners, retailers must take a hard objective look at their inventory of furniture and objects d’art too.  If it’s been around too long customers know it.  Before the new season’s merchandise is unveiled to customers an “inventory intervention’ must be performed.  This is where Richard must admit that his buying instincts are not always infallible. Despite the merits of the pieces he’s selected, he must let them go at rock bottom prices to make room for the next season’s vintage and modern finds.  There are few things in Glam Vintage & Moderne that I would not put in my house if I had the room AND most of them are on sale now!

So if you detoxed your space and you found that you need furniture or art or if someone you know needs an amazing gift, you might want to get it now while Richard is still feeling generous.

I’ve had a peak at some of the new (to Glam) vintage finds and OMG!  But the big reveal is a couple of weeks away and Richard NEEDS to make space. Let’s call him a motivated seller.
