I “said” I was looking for a bed for my infrequent out-of-town guest, but honestly I got it for the “room”. It’s an office which just looked too officious…all books, manuals, computers, cords and supplies. Despite my efforts to soften its edge with art, area rug and a couple of lamps it was just plain ugly.
Canadian upholstery maker, Statum Designs makes this cleanly styled comfy daybed that’s heaven to curl up on. I bought it in the neutral fabric because a) I move a lot and more importantly b) I would get to accessorize it with lots of new toss cushions from Glam.

A spring shock of bright colour can really wake up a dormant room. A basic off white couch is an invitation to wreak havoc with accessories. The bright bands on the candleholders transfer the pillows’ vivid colours throughout the room.

It’s time to make some brave choices and decorate outside of the “subtle” box. Whenever I think of the powerful effect of relatively inexpensive cushions in decorating I remember Marty Feldman’s sage advice in Young Frankenstein. Upon seeing Dr Frankenstein’s laboratory for the first time Gene Wilder says “What a filthy mess!”, Feldman (IGOR) responds “Oh, I don’t know. A little paint, a few flowers, a couple of throw pillows”:
Margaret Glew Abstract Oil on Canvas at Glam Vintage & Moderne
Someone like me loves this 48 inch by 48 inch “Someone Like You” original oil on canvas by Margaret Glew. She’s a Toronto artist who has been showing her layered abstracts in dissonant colour palettes at Engine Gallery and has been shown at PARCA in New York.
This summer’s new Moroccan inspired colour trend uses coral, pinks, fushias, mauves and reds together and like this painting, it really gets me excited.
Take one boring camel couch and load it with pillows in these great tones. Having “just said no to pink” when I was 12 yrs old has held me back from using it in my decor till now ( just a few years later).
I know Richard would be mortified if I suggested matching throw pillows to your art or worse buying art because the colours are on trend. So I’m doing this while he is in Montreal for the weekend.
